How do you keep cats out of the garden?

  • Current To Do List Pet's in Garden
Cat Repellents

Make a cat-curbing spray using a "tea" of seeped cayenne pepper flakes
and spray on your plants' leaves or soil surface. NEVER spray your cat
directly with this kind of tea. Cats hate strong smells especially
citrus. Place citrus peels on the soil surface.

If you have a zoo anywhere near and can get hold of some lion poo, (I've
seen it marketed here in the UK as 'Zoo Poo') and put this around the border
of your whole garden, the cats will stay away.

We've had the same trouble with our neighbor's unspayed cat that keeps
having kittens. They used to think my veggie and herb gardens were their
private litter boxes. After trying everything humane I could think of...and
have to admit that a few not so humane passed my mind more than once,
although were not acted upon...I decided to make a garden just for them.
It's on my property, but on the side closest to them, and it's filled with
catnip, cat mint and cat thyme. The cats and kittens love it, and tend to
leave MY gardens alone :)

Ultrasonic devices emit a high frequency sound which is annoying to cats (and dogs) but is not audible to humans. There are various different models some of which operate continuously and others which have an infra red detector and only emit a pulse of sound when the cat triggers the device. To be successful you need to ensure that the model is powerful enough to cover the area you wish to protect. In addition make sure that the sound frequency is designed for larger animals since some models are intended to deter insects and so would be no use for cats.

The broadcaster Jerry Baker has suggested treating your yard with a tonic made from chewing tobacco, urine, birth control pills, mouthwash, molasses, detergent and beer. A smallholder has reported success using dried rabbit blood but you may feel that the ingredients listed in the previous paragraph should be tried first.
